School based traineeships

Aim

The 4UM school-based Radio traineeship contributes towards that station’s aim to promote a strong, vibrant and socially cohesive community identify within Cherbourg and wider South Burnett region and provides opportunities for young people from Cherbourg to train and work in radio in their own community.

Background

4UM was established by the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council (CASC) commenced traineeships in 2008 following an approach by the Brisbane Indigenous Media Association (BIMA) in 2007. Providing traineeships at 4UM receives support an funding from the Council, radio staff provide practical on-site training and BIMA provides online modules to provide theory support to practical training. Why it Works

Students who have recently started traineeships are very keen and positive about the opportunities they have ahead of them. They are paid one day’s pay for the time at the radio station, which is a great incentive for young people to be actively involved. Read more

Keys to keeping this initiative alive

Media has a large role in the lives of all children and young people in Cherbourg in the future. Radio 4UM is committed to expanding its training options into other multimedia fields. Through the Cherbourg Aboriginal Multimedia and Resource Association, Radio 4UM hopes to become a registered training organisation so ‘local kids can learn here’. Read more

Advice to others who might want to try this in their communities

Radio 4UM has been able to take on trainees because staff at the station are committed to making it work for young people. They also believe that their own radio station is another way for Aboriginal stories to be told by the people who live them.

The positive partnership between staff and the trainees contributes to better relationships within the community and helps to build understanding.

Benefits

The radio traineeship program is still relatively young, but already some benefits are showing through. The trainees have a sense of pride about being chosen for the program and learning about the industry.
