Over June and July this year, the Commission will be consulting organisations that deliver a range of non-family-based care and accommodation services to children and young people in Queensland. These services include residential care programs, supported independent living programs, youth refuges and shelters, boarding schools, disability respite and mental health facilities.
The information that service providers share in the consultation will assist the Commission in its role of monitoring the child protection system and advocating for changes to improve outcomes for children and young people in alternative care.
The consultation has two stages:
CEO Survey: The first stage is an online survey of senior executives of agencies that deliver non-family-based care and accommodation services. This survey will be conducted over a few weeks in June. In most instances, CEOs will be invited by email to participate in the survey.
The survey asks CEOs to share their views about how the service system is operating – what is working well and what needs improvement. It also invites feedback on services provided by the Commission, including our Community Visitor Program, Complaints Service and Views of Young People in Residential Care reports.
Practitioner Survey: The second stage is a web survey of residential care practitioners that will take place during July. As part of the CEO Survey, CEOs will be invited to nominate experienced direct care workers, house parents, outreach support workers and facility and program managers to participate in this second stage of the consultation.
The Practitioner Survey will deepen the Commission’s understanding of the various contexts of contemporary residential care practice. This will in turn support more effective advocacy by the Commission, as well as assist us to review and improve our Views of Young People in Residential Care survey before it is conducted again in early 2011.
