Representatives from the Commission at the event included Community Visitor Carl Quinlan, Zonal Manager Donna Imeri and the Community Engagement Team's Jermaine Isua. The National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day, held on August 4, is an annual event which encourages organisations and communities across the country to stand together for the safety, wellbeing and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
“It is also about communicating to the broader Australian community the need for action at the government, community and personal level that shows our children that their people and culture are valued,” said Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC) National Secretary, Desley Thompson, at the launch in Cairns.
The Department of Communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Service (ATSIS), Brisbane North hosted cultural activities at Musgrave Park for children and young people in care, including their foster and kinship carers. Commission staff were in attendance to engage children and young people and the local Indigenous community.
Activities for the children included traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancing, weaving, painting and sharing Dreamtime stories. Commission staff were available to answer questions regarding the work of the Commission, distribute information and establish networks and links with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
The Commission was invited to plan and participate in next year’s Children’s Day.
The Commission recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Communities for involvement and participation at this event. Find out more
