Commission celebrates Indigenous culture at NAIDOC Family Fun Day – Friday 9 July

The Commission will host an interactive art activity for children and young people at the NAIDOC Family Fun Day at Brisbane’s Musgrave Park on Friday 9 July, as part of annual NAIDOC Week celebrations.

The Commission’s art activity will give children a chance to learn and participate in Indigenous art as well as find out more about the Commission, whose mandate includes listening to and speaking up for Queensland children.

The Commission invites all children, parents and families to attend the day, which starts at 9am. Commission staff will be on hand to talk and answer questions about the Commission’s services.

The Commission’s display will be located near the main stage. For the first time this year, the Commission is co-located with five other independent complaint agencies to make it easier for people to learn about making complaints and who to lodge their complaints to.

The other agencies are the Anti Discrimination Commission Queensland, Health Quality and Complaints Commission, Crime and Misconduct Commission, Queensland Ombudsman and Commonwealth Ombudsman.

Organised by the Musgrave Park Cultural Centre, the event celebrates and participates in the history, culture and achievements of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The event features live entertainment, food, traditional and contemporary Indigenous art, information and career stalls, plus free kids rides and activities. Find out more here.

This year’s NAIDOC theme ‘Unsung Heroes – Closing the Gap by Leading Their Way’, focuses on encouraging empowerment of the Indigenous community by recognising their individual achievements and contributions.

NAIDOC Week is an annual event promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, which date back almost 50,000 years, with the hope of strengthening relationships, fostering respect and increasing opportunities.
