Commission receives Certificate of Appreciation

On 14 September 2010, Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Elizabeth Fraser attended an appreciation ceremony hosted by the Department of Communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services (ATSIS), Brisbane North.

The Commissioner accepted a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Communities for the Commission’s involvement and participation at the 2010 SNAICC (Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care) Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day event, held back in August.

Bruce Milligan, Regional Executive Director (ATSIS) and Lawrence Swann, Regional Director (ATSIS) from the Department of Communities, acknowledged the contribution of the Commission, government and non-government agencies to making the cultural recognition day a success. The Department also invited participants to be involved in planning for the 2011 Children’s Day.

In her response, the Commissioner commended the efforts of ATSIS, Brisbane North for placing a priority on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, by bringing together community and government stakeholders to provide culturally connected activities for vulnerable children in care. It was important to note that the children’s non-Indigenous carers were involved in the event and got a chance to experience a part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The Commissioner highlighted the importance of promoting the rights, safety and wellbeing of young Australians. The Commissioner took the opportunity to promote the work of the Commission and the recently released Views of Children and Young People in Foster Care 2010 report documenting the findings of the Commission’s third survey of children and young people living in foster care, with particular focus on what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander told us in the survey.
