Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Elizabeth Fraser and Minister for Child Safety Phil Reeves. The Commission released its third annual survey report, Views of Children and Young People in Foster Care Queensland 2010, on 6 September at the beginning of Child Protection Week.
Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Elizabeth Fraser said Child Protection Week – an annual national event promoting the value of children and focusing attention on the issue of child abuse and neglect – represented an ideal opportunity to release the report.
The report documents the findings of the Commission’s third survey of children and young people living in foster care, and is the world’s largest ongoing study directly involving the participation of children and young people in foster care.
Key stakeholders at the launch included Minister for Child Safety Phil Reeves, Shadow Minister for Child Safety Jack Dempsey, representatives from the Opposition Leader's office, representatives from the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Family Court, CREATE, Foster Care Queensland, Peak Care, Local Government Association, Safe Places for Children, Save the Children, Youth Affairs Network, Historical Abuse Network, ACT for Kids, academics from all major Queensland institutions and representatives from key departments with responsibilities for service provision to young people in care.
Ms Fraser briefed stakeholders on the findings of the report, including the ‘lived experiences’ of children and young people in foster care across the state and how life in foster care could be improved for them in the future.
“Improving outcomes for the state’s children and young people, particularly our most vulnerable, is one of the most important jobs in the state,” Ms Fraser said.
“Our research gives children and young people a voice in their own lives, and I urge everyone to read what these young people have told us and remember that child protection is everybody’s business.”
The report, including the summary version and young person’s edition, can be downloaded here.
