Queensland Child Protection Research Symposium

The Commission welcomed the opportunity to deliver a presentation at the third Queensland Child Protection Research Symposium on 25 November.

The Symposium provided the opportunity for academics, policy makers and practitioners to listen and discuss research on child protection with people who shared a professional and personal commitment to improving the lives of children.

Speakers included Professor Karen Healy, University of Queensland, School of Social Work and Human Services and Professor Bob Lonne and Queensland University of Technology, School of Social Work and Human Services. The non-government and community sectors were also represented with speakers and attendees from PeakCare, Queensland Council of Social Services (QCOSS), CREATE, and Life Without Barriers.

Commission staff, Dr Lee Tennent and Dr Jennifer Sanderson from the Strategic Policy and Research Program presented the key findings from the Commission’s Views survey of children and young people in foster care.

The presentation focused on children’s views of their current placement, their experiences of the child protection system and the support provided by Child Safety Officers and the Commission’s Community Visitors. It also included survey findings to help improve the support and interventions provisions to children and young people in the child protection system.

The Views series of surveys of children in foster and residential care and youth detention is a component of the comprehensive range of work the Commission undertakes to monitor and report on the wellbeing and rights of children and young people in care in Queensland.

The symposium was part of the Queensland Child Protection Research Roundtable, which was established by Professor Clare Tilbury, School of Human Services and Social Work, Griffith University.

The Roundtable comprises representatives from the government and university sectors as well as community organisations working in the child protection sector. The Roundtable aims to increase research collaboration between the government, non-government and academic sector and showcase existing Queensland research on child protection and out-of-home care.
