Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence meetings

The Commission participated in the third and final meeting of the reconvened Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence (QSAAV) in November.

QSAAV was first established in February 2010 for a six month period to provide advice to the Honourable Cameron Dick, Minister for Education, and Training on best practice measures to address bullying and violence in schools. As a QSAAV member, Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian, Elizabeth Fraser provided leadership on the processes and value of consulting with students in addressing these issues.

QSAAV was reconvened from October to December 2011 to consider progress made on implementing its 2010 recommendations. QSAAV also provided further advice to the Minister for Education on how Queensland schools can address weapons in schools and cyber-bullying from mobile phones and other devices such as computer tablets at school.

When preparing its advice, QSAAV was asked to consider government-commissioned reports from youth violence expert Professor Paul Mazerolle of Griffith University and child psychologist and anti-bullying expert Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. QSAAV was also asked to consider data collection needs across all schools to inform future planning and policy development.

QSAAV’s six month program of work culminated in a report to the Education Minister, The Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence Report, released in October 2010.The report made eight recommendations which the government and three schooling sectors committed to implement.
