A report identifying improvements in the health, safety and wellbeing of most Queensland children was today released by the Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian.
Snapshot 2011: Children and Young People in Queensland is a report which collates information from various sources, showed Queensland children were generally healthy and provided with a broad range of educational and developmental opportunities.
Topics included in Snapshot 2011 are:
While it is promising to see that positive outcomes are being achieved, there is still much work to be done in some areas. The report shows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children continue to fare poorly on a range of safety, health, education and social measures compared to their non-Indigenous peers.
The number of children placed in out-of-home care continues to rise, with a particular growth in the number of Indigenous children in out-of-home care and the overall number of young people living in residential care.
Strengthening prevention and early intervention services in the interests of children at risk of entering the child protection system is important.
The information in this report will be used to inform policy and program development across all sectors to ensure everyone is doing all they can for Queensland’s children. By working with the community, the Commission will ensure Queensland is a better place for children to live.
