Release of QSAAV report

The Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence (QSAAV) report was publicly released and tabled in Parliament on 26 October 2010.

QSAAV was formed in February 2010 to provide advice to the Minister for Education and Training on best practice measures to address bullying and violence in schools.

The QSAAV report presents eight recommendations which provide school-based actions and strategies to assist schools to effectively deal with bullying and violence. All eight recommendations have been accepted, including those that recognise the importance of giving students a voice. Student consultation is also identified as one of the10 elements of effective school-based action against bullying.

Commissioner Elizabeth Fraser was a member of QSAAV and provided leadership for the student consultation process on behalf of the group.

During June 2010, officers from the Commission’s Strategic Policy and Research Program ran a series of focus group discussions with Queensland students. Based on this work, the Commission has produced a student consultation report (PDF, 412KB) and developed a consultation model with a set of resources that schools can adopt in their own student engagement process. All of these resources have been made available to schools through the Department of Education and Training’s website.

The Commission will continue to actively promote the right for children and young people to be consulted through the outcomes of the QSAAV initiative and its findings.
