Views of Children and Young People in Foster Care – 2011 survey

The Commission will soon commence its fourth Views of Children and Young People in Foster Care survey. Between April and July 2011, the Commission's Community Visitors (CVs) will offer all eligible children and young people living in foster or kinship care in Queensland the opportunity to participate in the survey.

This survey is the largest of its kind involving the direct participation of children and young people in out-of-home care. Since the survey commenced in 2006, more than 9,000 surveys have been completed.

The survey covers a range of topics including quantitative and qualitative questions about children or young people's placement and experiences in care, such as:

  • Do you get to have a say about what happens to you?
  • What is the best thing about living here?
  • What would you most like to see improved or changed to make the system better for kids?

Findings from the 2011 surveys will be published in three reports: a technical report; a summary report; and a young person’s version of the report – all of which will be available on the Commission’s website in September 2012. The findings will help inform policy, advocacy and decision-making in relation to the foster care and child protection systems.

The foster care survey is one in the suite of Views surveys conducted by the Commission that offer children and young people living away from home the opportunity to express their views about issues relevant to them and their experiences of the child protection and youth justice systems. The other surveys in this series are the Views of Young People in Residential Care and Views of Young People in Detention Centres.

All reports relating to the Views surveys can be downloaded from the Commission's website at: http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/resources/publications/reports.html
