Child deaths annual report released

The Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian, Elizabeth Fraser, has released for tabling in Parliament the Commission’s latest Annual Report: Deaths of children and young people, Queensland 2010–11.

The report found that the number of Queensland children who died from external causes in 2010–11 was the lowest recorded since the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian began reporting in 2004.

Transport was the leading external cause of death, followed by suicide. For the second year in a row, suicide replaced transport as the leading cause of death for young people aged 15-17 years.

The rate of drowning was also the lowest ever recorded since 2004, which included six drownings directly attributed to the January 2011 Queensland floods.

Overall in 2010–11, the deaths of 465 children and young people were registered. The rate of child deaths has remained consistent since the Commission established the state’s Child Death Register in 2004.

The full report, along with a summary of the report highlights, are available here.

The Commission has also recently released its final reports on Keeping Country Kids Safe and the Reducing Youth Suicide in Queensland project, which can be found on the Reports page here.

The independent Queensland Child Death Case Review Committee, of which Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Elizabeth Fraser is chairperson, has also released its 2010–11 report on the review of deaths of 65 children and young people who were known to the child protection system. This report can be downloaded from the CDCRC’s website.
