The Commission takes a walk on Day for Daniel

On Friday 28 October, 100 staff at the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian participated in a 5km walk to support the Day for Daniel. Garbed in red, the colour that marks the Day for Daniel, and led by Commissioner Elizabeth Fraser and Assistant Commissioner Barry Salmon, staff headed out from the office at 53 Albert Street. They walked across the Goodwill Bridge, along South Bank parklands and over the Kurilpa Bridge. Participants walked at a brisk pace, returning to the Commission’s Albert Street in just under 50 minutes.

Fundraising activities have been enthusiastically supported within the Commission and included staff donations throughout October and culminated in a raffle. As a result, the Commission has managed to raise over $1400 for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

Commissioner Elizabeth Fraser said the generosity shown by staff was commendable and all monies raised would be going towards a good cause.

"Day for Daniel is an opportunity for all of us to positively promote children’s safety as being the responsibility of a whole community and to ensure community leadership, support and advocacy for the wellbeing of all children" Ms Fraser said.

Day for Daniel was first established in 2005 by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation as an annual awareness day to promote a safer world for children. Day for Daniel encourages community and school participation in a range of fun and educational activities designed to provide children with life skills and promote their safety.

Now in its 7th year, Day for Daniel continues to grow on a national scale and is recognised as Australia’s largest participation event of its type. It is reported that nationally over 1 million people were involved in activities for this year’s Day for Daniel.
