Commission hosts information forum for key community partners on the Child Guardian Report: Child Protection System 2009-10

The Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian, Elizabeth Fraser, held an information session on 12 December 2011 for community (non-government) partners to discuss the key findings from the recently released Child Guardian Report: Child Protection System 2009-10.

Stakeholders were interested to hear more about the Commission’s role in monitoring the outcomes experienced by children and young people in the child protection system and the findings against the 10 outcome indicators across the child protection service delivery continuum.

The Commissioner also used the opportunity to seek feedback from the stakeholders present on their perspectives on the key issues currently impacting on children and young people in the child protection system. Some of the topics discussed were:

  • possible under-reporting of child protection concerns in relation to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) children
  • the importance of maintaining cultural connections for CALD and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
  • the importance of case planning, cultural planning and transition from care planning, and
  • the need to consider further support for young people after they have left state care.

The Commission will consider these, and other issues discussed, in the year ahead as part of the Commission’s ongoing monitoring of the child protection system.

Released annually, the Child Guardian Report: Child Protection System provides a review of key data and information about safety and wellbeing outcomes experienced by children and young people within the Queensland child protection system.
