Ambulance officers

Ambulance Officers employed by the Queensland Ambulance Service under the Ambulance Service Act 1991, do not require a blue card when carrying out a function under that Act (for example, providing an emergency service).

However, Ambulance Officers employed by a private ambulance service providing  a health service to a child which requires physical contact or where the service is provided while no-one else is present (for example first aid at sporting carnivals) will require a blue card if they work, or are likely to work, for at least:

  • eight consecutive days, or
  • once a week, each week, over four weeks, or
  • once a fortnight, each fortnight, over eight weeks, or
  • once a month, each month, over six months

unless an exemption applies.

You can apply for a blue card by submitting a Paid employee (P) application form (PDF, 146KB) and selecting the ‘health, counselling and support services’ category of regulated employment.

Please note, as a paid employee you can commence child-related work after you have lodged your blue card application with the Commission.
