Babysitters

I run a private baby-sitting service. Do I need a blue card?

Yes. Your work as a private baby-sitter falls under the 'child care services and similar employment' category of regulated business.

You can apply for a blue card by submitting an 'Education and care/ child care business application form (CCB)' and selecting 'other child care services - nanny/ babysitter'.

Please note, as a business operator you must not commence child-related work until after you have received a blue card.

I sometimes care for my neighbour’s children – do I need a blue card?

If you are not earning any income and the arrangement is informal and/or on an ad hoc or casual basis, then it is likely this will be a ‘private arrangement’.

A private arrangement does not fall within the scope of the Commission's Act and you are therefore not required to hold a blue card.

A ‘private arrangement’ might also include:-

  • providing a car pool service where you drive your own and other children to and from school;
  • baby sitting a relative such as a niece, nephew or younger cousin.
