I am a board member of a university or tertiary education institution. Do I need a blue card?
Yes. Where the university carries on regulated business or employment, such as a child care centre or counselling and support service for children and young people, executive officers of the university (whose principal place of residence is in Australia) must hold a blue card.
An executive officer is any person who is concerned with, or takes part in, the management of the corporation.
You can apply for a blue card by submitting a 'Business (B) application' form (PDF, 295KB) and selecting the relevant category.
Please note, as a business operator you must not commence child-related work until after you have received a blue card.
I am a volunteer committee member at my child's sports club. Do I need a blue card?
Yes.
Generally, parents of children who volunteer at their child's club can be considered to be exempt from requiring blue cards if their child receives the same or similar services for which the parent's employment relates.
Committee members provide a range of activities within churches, clubs or associations, some of which cannot be considered to be 'same or similar' services to those activities they might otherwise provide to their children when they are afforded the volunteer parent exemption. It is for this reason committee members captured within the 'churches, clubs and associations involving children' category of regulated employment may require blue cards.
Volunteer parents should speak to the volunteer coordinator they intend to volunteer for about the nature of the child-related activities they will be involved in and whether they require a blue card.
You can apply for a blue card by submitting a 'Volunteer (V) application' form (PDF, 286KB) and selecting the relevant category.
