Frequently Asked Questions

Employed in a school

I am employed, on a paid basis, to drive a school bus. Do I need a blue card?

Yes, if you drive the bus regularly and you are not exempt under the ‘schools – employees other than teachers and parents’ category of regulated employment.

You need a blue card if any of the usual functions of your employment include, or are likely to include, providing services directed mainly towards children, or conducting activities mainly involving children, at a school, if you carry out this work, or are likely to carry out this work, over 12 months, for

  • eight consecutive days, or
  • once a week each week over four weeks, or
  • once a fortnight each fortnight over eight weeks, or
  • once a month each month over six months.

However, you do not need a blue card if you are a teacher registered under the Education (Queensland College of Teachers) Act 2005.

You may apply for a blue card by submitting a Paid Employment (P) Application Form accompanied by the prescribed fee.

Note

As a paid employee you may begin or continue work while your application is being processed.
