Frequently Asked Questions

Self Employed contractor going into a boarding school

I own and operate a business that carries out work at a boarding school. Do I need a blue card?

Yes.

You need a blue card if any of your usual work is carried out, or is likely to be carried out, inside a boarding facility at a school; and you work, or are likely to the work over a period of 12 months for:

  • eight consecutive days, or
  • once a week each week over four weeks, or
  • once a fortnight each fortnight over eight weeks, or
  • once a month each month over six months.

As you have an agreement with the school to do this work, the school is your employer for the purposes of the Act and must complete the employer details on the application form and sight your proof of identification documents.

You can apply for a blue card by submitting a Paid Employment (P) Application Form.

Note

As a paid employee you may begin or continue work while your application is being processed.
