Regulated employment

Private teaching, coaching or tutoring

Volunteers

As this category requires work to be performed on a commercial basis, it is not possible to be a volunteer under this category, however voluntary teaching, coaching or tutoring may fall under a different category of regulated employment, for example a volunteer coach at a soccer club may fall under the “churches, clubs and associations” category.

Paid employees

Paid employees need a blue card if, over the course of 12 months, a usual function of their employment includes, or is likely to include teaching, coaching or tutoring 1 child or more than 1 child on a commercial basis at the same time for at least:

  • eight consecutive days, or
  • once a week, each week, over four weeks, or
  • once a fortnight, each fortnight, over eight weeks, or
  • once a month, each month over six months.
