Keeping Country Kids Safe
The Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian (the Commission) is an independent agency responsible for protecting the rights, interests and wellbeing of children and young people in Queensland. Since 2004, part of the Commission's role has been to collect and analyse information on the deaths of children in Queensland and recommend ways of preventing these in the future.
The Commission has found that children in country areas are more likely to die as a result of non-intentional injury than those in the city.
They seem to face a number of risks unique to their environment, such as drowning in dams or all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes. A key factor is the unique combination of the home and the workplace that occurs on family farms.
The Commission is committed to working with the rural sector to identify ways to prevent child deaths, and has launched the Keeping Country Kids Safe initiative.
The Commission aims to unlock an evidence-based, co-ordinated approach to child injury prevention in country Queensland, and believes the best way to do this is to bring together the knowledge, skills and experience of people at all levels - from government agencies through to the agricultural industries and local communities themselves.
